LG’s SK10Y is a big, beast of a soundbar designed to partner premium 4K TVs, shove their in-built speakers aside and bring on Dolby Atmos-flavoured home cinema entertainment. Manufactured in partnership with Meridian Audio, it takes the top spot in LG's 2018 lineup...

Polk Audio is the latest brand to add wireless rear speakers to a soundbar/subwoofer system, therefore offering a 5.1 solution to those not interested in the more traditional approach based around a separate amplifier, 5.1 speaker package and oodles of speaker cable.

The system in question is the Magnifi MAX SR, available for around £600. It's the expanded version of Polk's 3.1-channel Magnifi MAX, itself a more serious proposition than the compact Magnifi Mini.

Coming in at £1,500, Samsung's HW-N950 is
a serious, home cinema-centric proposition, comprising
the main soundbar, wireless subwoofer, and two wireless rear speakers. The promise is 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos/DTS:X sonics with a premium performance...

The very idea seems preposterous.
A 3.1-channel Dolby Atmos soundbar system that lacks upfiring speakers? But that’s exactly what Sony offers here...

From the same range as JBL's multichannel-capable Bar 5.1, only less ambitious, comes the Bar Studio. A subwoofer-free, 2.0-channel design aimed at mid-size flatscreen owners, it arrives in the UK with a £150 ticket, meaning it joins an already crowded market of budget 'bars.

JBL's Bar 5.1 aims to bridge the gap between the soundbar norm and a multichannel setup, by the addition of wireless surround speakers that unclip from the main enclosure. The idea being that you can bring these out for movie night, and reattach them to the 'bar afterwards.

Soundbars continue to be the home entertainment sound system of choice for most people. Even those with a serious multichannel setup may well have a soundbar in another room to bolster a TV without the fuss of amps and speakers. But not all claim to create a surround sound experience – a feature which tops the spec sheet of Samsung's HW-N650.

Fitting somewhere in the middle of Samsung's burgeoning range of upper-market soundbars, the HW-MS750 is a mid-sized offering festooned with features and connectivity. As with the brand's flagship HW-K950 and HW-MS650 tested previously, R&D has been completed at Samsung's California-based Audio Design Lab, so the promise here is of yet another high-performance partner for your flatscreen.

Q Acoustics’ motorway-themed soundbar range continues with the M3, a slimmer and more affordable follow-up to the M4 (reviewed here and winner of our Soundbar of the Year award) and is actually still on sale three years later.

Is the time right to downsize that soundbar? Well, with set-top boxes, games consoles, Blu-ray players and jumbo bags of Maltesers all vying for space beneath your flatscreen, real estate is increasingly precious, so if you can shrink without impacting sound quality, going nano clearly makes a lot of sense.

Cambridge Audio could have gone back to the drawing board for its latest soundbase speaker, but has instead opted to take its previous TV5 model and refresh its audio chops and connective options while retaining the muted styling and driver technology. It's retained the naming system too, so be aware that this is known as the TV5 (v2), and the more affordable new TV2 is the TV2 (v2).

British audio brand Orbitsound has a narrow focus – the One (P70) soundbar here is joined by only two other 'bars, plus a wireless Bluetooth speaker, in its hardware stable. But when it comes to sonics, it aims to be anything but narrow. Instead, Orbitsound is on a mission to kill the sweet spot...

Samsung's HW-MS650 soundbar arrives as the first of the brand's 2017 audio lineup. It hopes to build upon the good work of last year's exemplary HW-K950, and again boasts development at Samsung's state-of-the-art Audio Design Lab, which opened in 2016 with staff poached from luminary brands such as Harman, B&O and Gibson, plus Hollywood’s film industry.
