Beast of bass! JBL unveils dual 15in subwoofer weighing 150kg

JBL Synthesis, the custom cinema/pro-audio division of JBL, has unveiled a new dual 15in subwoofer at this year's CES that looks set to appeal to bass-hedz.

The SSW-1 Subwoofer [above, left] is part of the brand's new SCL (Synthesis Custom Loudspeaker) series and expected to hit retail in March.

Alongside the SCL-1 LCR speaker [above, right], the SSW-1 marks the debut of products developed by the new JBL Synthesis Product Council, which has collaborated with the custom install community to develop 'largescale' system solutions.

'Features and capabilities were reviewed and refined in conjunction with the members of the product council in order to deliver on the needs and expectations of the customers who have been requesting them,' says JBL Synthesis.

The SSW-1 features two front-firing 15in composite cone woofers, each claiming a 4in excursion and featuring 6in voice coils. Twin Slipstream ports contribute to a claimed low-frequency reach of 13Hz.

The sub's cabinet uses 1in-thick MDF walls with internal bracing and a steel frame, and measures 1.3m high when deployed vertically, or 60cm high when horizontal. Although as the SSW-1 weighs in at 150kg approx, it may be that users orient it whichever way requires the least amount of lifting...

A passive design, the SSW-1 is rated at being able to handle amplification up to 2 x 2,500W (RMS) – each driver is given its own speaker-level input.

Pricing for the SSW-1 is expected to be $7,500 (UK retail price TBC). Joining it in March will be the $15,000-a-piece SCL-1, a custom install LCR speaker ussing two 12in bass drivers and JBL's patented D2430K 3in high-frequency compression driver mated to an HDI horn.
