Marantz joins 11-channel AVR club with SR8012
Marantz is joining stable-mate Denon and Canadian corp Anthem in releasing an 11-channel AVR. The SR8012, Marantz's new AVR flagship, will hit retailers in December.
Priced at £2,700, the SR8012 will support 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos and DTS:X audio (plus Auro3D out of the box) without the need for additional amplification, and claims to deliver 205W to each of its 11 channels.
Audiophile grade construction goodies include an 'oversized power supply', shielded custom-built toroidal transformer and high-current capacitors. The receiver's copper-plated chassis design and transformer have been pilfered from the brand's Reference Series stereo separates.
Surround sound processing is marshalled by four SHARC DSPs, and room EQ handled by Audyssey's MultEQ XT32 platform (including Sub EQ HT, Dynamic Volume and DynamicEQ). The AVR is also compatible with Audyssey's optional MultEQ Editor App, which promises more in-depth adjustment.
HEOS multiroom functionality is integrated in the SR8012, allowing your home cinema to become another audio zone in a HEOS setup, and local sources to be streamed around the house. Wired/Wi-Fi networking, Bluetooth and AirPlay support are natually on the feature list. Hi-res file support via USB or networked gear includes 24-bit/192kHz ALAC, FLAC and WAV, plus DSD 2.8MHz/5.6MHz.
On the video side, Marantz's flagship SR8012 looks suitably futureproof, with its eight HDMI inputs and three outputs all supporting 4K/60p, 4:4:4 colour and BT.2020 passthrough. HDR compatibility includes HDR10 and Dolby Vision; HLG (and eARC functionality) are promised via a future firmware update.
The receiver features Marantz's typical symmetrical fascia design with 'porthole' status window and pull-down flap. Finish options are black or silver gold. Decisions, decisions.
