Metal Gear Solid: HD Collection

Enjoy a blast from the past with this hi-def makeover for Solid Snake and chums

The past couple of years has seen a growing trend for remastering older games for the current generation of consoles. Which is great news for those of us wanting revisit a classic with the added benefit of snazzy new hi-def graphics. This month it’s the turn of Hideo Kojima’s legendary stealth-action series to get a spot of hi-def spit and polish.

Konami has really outdone itself with this Metal Gear Solid: HD Collection, presenting gamers with graphically-updated versions of three games from the series – MGS 2: Sons of Liberty, MGS 3: Snake Eater and MGS: Peace Walker. There are also some excellent extras on offer, including the original MSX2 Metal Gear and its sequel. With each of the three main games still proving as cinematic and addictive as ever, this is easily the best value-for-money compilation since Valve’s legendary Orange Box.

Beyond the cosmetic upgrades, the games themselves are the same as they ever were. While this means some elements feel a little archaic today (MGS 2’s fixed camera is a prime example), it ensures that these are exactly the same games fans originally fell in love with, idiosyncracies and glitches included.
