Long gone are the days when Resident Evil games were all about sneaking around dark mansions and avoiding shambling zombies. This latest instalment seems to have more in common with Paul W.S. Anderson's action-packed movie adaptations, with the first 10 minutes of play finding you dodging cars thrown into the air by a massive explosion, and then battling the undead onboard a helicopter that is about to crash into a speeding train.

Empire Cinemas has today announced The Empire Leicester Square will be the first cinema in the UK compatible with Dolby's new Atmos surround sound format, and the tech will make its debut next week with the fantasy flick Life Of Pi. Ang Lee's Oscar-tipped movie is getting a seven-day run at the Empire before its nationwide UK release on December 20.   Dolby claims its new Atmos format is 'the most significant development in audio since the arrival of surround sound', thanks to its use of overhead speakers and a twin-layer object-based sound design. 'Developed with input from professionals throughout the movie industry, Dolby Atmos delivers audiences a more natural and realistic soundfield, transporting them into the story with a lifelike sensory experience,' claims the aural innovator. The format debuted with Disney Pixar's flick Brave earlier this year, but until now there were no commerical cinemas Atmosified in Blighty.   Adds Jon Nutton, Marketing Director for Empire Cinemas: 'Dolby Atmos is set to change the cinema experience – we’re honoured that the Empire Leicester Square will be the first cinema in the UK to bring this to audiences.'   Team HCC already counts the Empire as one of the UK's best-sounding cinemas. We're looking forward to seeing what Dolby Atmos can bring to the party. As well as Life of Pi, other films confirmed for release with Atmos audio include the sci-fi sequel Star Trek Into Darkness and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.   Click here for more information about Dolby Atmos.

There's no two ways about it – 2012 is set to be remembered by fans as the year that cult filmmaker Joss Whedon finally conquered Hollywood. Not only was he responsible for the year's best blockbuster, Avengers Assemble, he also co-wrote and produced this clever, witty and gory deconstruction of the horror genre.

We've had to wait two years for Oppo to launch a new Blu-ray player. For some home cinema fans, that's at least 12 months too long – the brand has earned a reputation for unleashing decks (going back to the days of DVD) that mix high performance with advanced features and show the mass market global giants how it should be done.

Boasting an armoured build that would do Tony Stark proud, Onkyo’s new TX-NR5010 receiver is a mouth-watering proposition - a 25kg home cinema heavyweight boasting state-of-the art audio/visual processing and unbending muscle.

That’s it then. The Harry Potter saga has finally come to an end. And while it’s been an uneven ride, it’s hard to deny that this last film sends the franchise off in style in a way that, say, Police Academy VII never quite managed.

The YHT-S401 seemingly has a lot going for it, including Yamaha’s rich heritage in soundbars and a comprehensive specification that makes a mockery of the similarly-priced Bose Solo. The YHT-S401 boasts four HDMI sockets, a headphone jack, FM aerial input and a USB input. No simple booster for your TV’s sonics here, we’re talking HD audio decoding for Blu-ray discs and streaming of MP3 and WMA files from USB flash drives, plus iPod and smartphone compatibility. In a perfect world we’d also be talking about Bluetooth and AirPlay, but you don’t need to be the taxman who studies Google’s annual return to know you don’t always get what you want.

From a standing start in 2008, Orbitsound has made quite an impact in the soundbar market, and the T9 reviewed here offers a more affordable and compact alternative to its well-received T12. It's aimed equally at movie enthusiasts seeking an affordable TV audio upgrade and, thanks to its top-mounted iPod dock, the generation of music fans who want somewhere to berth their iDevice.

Netgear, better-known for its NAS boxes and routers, has for some time also been producing network devices of another type – media players. One of its stable is the NeoTV 550, which, thanks to its lack of Android, Boxee, etc, feels reassuringly traditional. It’s not out-dated, though – as well as networked content, the player gives you a choice of some online material, and the ability to feed media into it via USB or SD cards.
