A simple business trip to Hong Kong results in a global pandemic that threatens to wipe out a vast proportion of the human race in Steven Soderbergh’s medical thriller. But despite it’s all-star cast (including Gwyneth Paltrow, Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Jude Law and Laurence Fishburne), Contagion couldn’t be further removed from the likes of Outbreak.

Dixons’ own-brand 3DTV ships with ten pairs of 3D glasses in the box. Unfortunately the quality of a set’s stereoscopy is not proportional to the number of comedy goggles it comes with.

This issue’s pro install reflects a common concern – how to harness wasted loft space. The brief here was to indulge the owner’s passion for enjoying sports events in the company of friends and family, and to have movies and kids’ TV shows accessible from a simple touch-screen controller. Support for 3D was a must, too.

The ubiquitous iPod has infiltrated most areas of home cinema but the projector market has always been an Apple-free zone. Until now that is. Epson’s MG-850HD is the world’s first home cinema projector with a built-in iPod dock, allowing you to watch movies and TV shows from your Apple device on a screen up to 300in in size – as well as playing music through its integrated 10W speakers.

It's less than a week now until Marvel's superhero slobberknocker Avengers Assemble explodes on to cinema screen across the UK, which can mean only one thing... adult film compant Vivid Entertainment has been hard at work cooking up an X-rated spoof.

The science-fiction genre has frequently proven fertile ground for allegories about concerns regarding the world we live in. Andrew ‘Gattaca’ Niccol’s latest film is one of the more ham-fisted to come along in recent years.

Released into cinemas back in 2009, Coraline is the latest stop-motion animated feature from director Henry Selick, the man behind A Nightmare Before Christmas. This time around he turned to a novel by noted fantasy author Neil Gaiman for his source material, and the result is a dark, disturbing and marvellously grotesque modern fairytale. Bored and neglected by her workaholic parents, Coraline stumbles into an alternate world where the button-eyed 'Other Mother' and 'Other Father' give her the love and attention she always craved. But as you might expect, it all comes at a terrible price...

Combined Blu-ray and DVD sales of the Swedish-language crime classic The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo have shot past the 1 million mark in the UK following a sudden spike in sales in recent months. The renewed interest in the film may well have been spurred on by the recent Hollywood remake of the film, which itself arrives on Blu-ray and DVD in the UK next week.

If there was any doubt that Philips is one of the most innovative TV brands at work today, it’s been emphatically eradicated by the first two TVs we’ve seen from the brand’s belated 2011/202 range. First there was the 46PFL9706T, which used its Moth-Eye filter to deliver class-leading black level response. And now we have the 50PFL7956H, otherwise known as the Cinema 21:9 Gold: the brand’s first TV to combine its super-wide, film-friendly 21:9 aspect ratio with passive 3D technology.

Scream queens are the bread and butter of the horror genre, dating back at least as far as Fay Wray’s iconic performance in the 1933 smash King Kong. All an actress needs to do to qualify for the title is become associated with the genre through a notable appearance in a major horror movie or through a series of appearances in a variety of movies. Thanks to films like Halloween, The Fog and Friday the 13th, the late ‘70s/early ‘80s saw the likes of Jamie Lee Curtis, Adrienne Barbeau and Betsy Palmer all being crowned scream queens.
