Thanks to the enduring popularity of Akira Toriyama's original Dragon Ball manga strip and ensuing animated adaptations (the 153-episode Dragon Ball and 291-episode Dragon Ball Z), the past three decades have seen the release of more than 50 licensed videogames. So you'd expect the development teams to have ironed out all of the kinks by now and perfected the formula, right?

Visually beautiful and refreshingly accessible, DriveClub is an automotive sim with an arcade bent, and as such it’s a tad more fun than Forza. You start with a hot hatch and work your way up to better wheels. Racing solo, progressing from Rookie to Legend, takes some time to unlock the best cars – in multiplayer mode, you’ll make far faster progress.

Taking its inspiration from Jewish religious work the Book of Enoch, this unusual videogame charts the adventures of Noah's great-grandfather Enoch on a Heaven-sent quest to save the world from seven fallen angels.

Let's not beat around the bush, F1 2010 is easily the best Formula One game to ever grace a games console. Heck, why stop there - it's also the best attempt at capturing the motorsport in videogame form since the glory days of the Geoff Crammond's Grand Prix series.

Arcade racers are ten a penny on consoles, but it's a very different matter when it comes to genuine driving simulations. Like flight sims, these have primarily been the preserve of the PC gamer. That said, there are a couple of notable exceptions, the most obvious of which is Codemasters' official Foruma One series. Ever since it took over the license, starting with the excellent F1 2010, the develeper has been tailoring its games for hardcore racing fans. In the process it has created a one of the most authentic feeling racing experiences ever to grace a games console.

Sun, sea and shooting are the order of the day in this superb first-person action game. Eschewing the genre's usual fondness for funnelling players down carefully-disguised corridors, Far Cry 3 gives you an open-world tropical island to explore as you try to rescue your chums from vicious pirates.

While each of Ubisoft's previous sandbox shooters has felt like a reinvention of the franchise, this year's offering hews so close to the structure of Far Cry 3 that it sometimes feels like a re-skin. But does it really matter when the end result is this much fun?

When it came to football games I was always a Pro Evolution Soccer man. However, since the dawn of the current generation of games consoles, like other fans, I'd suffered through several iterations of PES that failed to live up to expectations, struggling to come to terms with the graphical capabilities offered by the hardware and seemingly taking a step backwards in gameplay terms at the same time. And the ever-popular FIFA franchise was no solution, seemingly still stuck in creating a more arcade-based take on the sport that traded depth for special moves.

The past few years have seen the world's two largest football franchises undergoing something of a transformation. While Konami's PES series has been in something of a Liverpool-like freefall recently, EA Sports' FIFA brand has become the football game equivalent of Manchester City, delivering a level of tactical player and ability that nobody would have predicted several years ago.

It’s now 15 years since the PlayStation release of Final Fantasy VII brought the Japanese RPG franchise to the attention of mainstream gamers across the globe. But the intervening years have seen a change of fortune for developer Square Enix, with the Final Fantasy brand becoming a victim of its own success and struggling to live up to former glories.

Xbox One racer Forza 5's headline trick is delivering its huge car collection and decent selection of tracks in beautifully shiny 1080p graphics running at a silky smooth and consistent 60fps – something other titles on the console have conspicuously failed to do.

Surely nobody really expected that a franchise as lucrative as Microsoft's third-person shooter would end when Marcus Fenix hung up his gun at the end of Gears of War 3? After all, the Locust War established that there was a whole universe of narrow corridors and waist-high barriers for soldiers to battle through...

Being huge fans of the Godzilla films, the idea of taking control of Japan's King of the Monsters and rampaging through cities while doing battle with some of his most iconic enemies sounded like videogame nirvana. However, after sitting down with Namco Bandai's new Godzilla game for a few hours, there was only one thing on our mind: how had the developer got everything so disastrously wrong?

Okay, so Rockstar's latest isn't exactly enlightened in its depiction of women. And, yes, it contains a rather troubling torture scene. But these are ultimately small concerns when placed in the context of what is surely the most outstanding, exhilarating and multilayered open-world game ever.

Having already sewn up its domination of the serious simulation side of the racing genre with its Formula One games, Codemasters now sets about doing the same for the arcade-style racer with this long-awaited sequel to 2008's Race Driver: Grid.
