Sky has today begun rolling out HDR playback via its integrated Netflix app on its Sky Q platform. The satcaster says the functionality will be available to all customers via mid-November.

Sky Q has offered Netflix on-demand since 2018, but the service has previously only been available in SDR.

Netflix HDR joins the platform's existing HDR content library, which launched in May this year with titles including Gangs of Lemur Island, Britannia II and Bulletproof 2. Disney+ subscribers have also been able to view HDR via their Sky Q hardware since July.

Sky is also teasing an expansion of its own HDR content. Sky Originals Patrick Melrose and Code 404 will debut in HDR later this month, and it will begin delivering HDR movies with The Secret Garden, and 'more Sky Cinema HDR movies coming in time for Christmas.'

It has also announced that live sports broadcasts in HDR will being in 2021.

Says Fraser Stirling, Group Chief Product Officer, Sky: 'It’s great to add Netflix’s HDR films and TV shows to the growing collection of stunning HDR content on Sky Q, giving our customers a brighter, bolder and more realistic viewing experience.'

To get HDR via Sky Q you need a compatible HDR TV (natch), HDR ready Sky Q PVR and a subscription to either the Ultra HD + HD or Q Experience package. Netflix in HDR is delivered via a Netflix Premium sub, which is included in the Ultra HD + HD bundle.
