The year is 2077 and the Earth lies in ruins following an invasion by an alien force. While humanity managed to win the war, it came at the cost of our world. The only humans remaining on Earth are Jack Harper (Tom Cruise) and Vica Olsen (Andrea Riseborough), a two-person technical team tasked with overseeing robot drones. But when a vessel crashes to Earth containing a mysterious woman (Olga Kurylenko) who haunts his dreams, Harper begins to realise that all is not as it seems.

Dom (Vin Diesel), Brian (the late Paul Walker) and the rest of the Fast & Furious gang are brought back out of 'retirement' when Agent Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) asks for their assistance in taking down a criminal mastermind with his own team of ace drivers. Having begun his animation career at Pixar working on Toy Story and THX promos, Hal Hickel transfered to Industrial Light & Magic in order to work on the Star Wars prequels having been a fan of the franchise since childhood (he even submitted his own script for a Star Wars sequel at the age of 12 and received a polite rejection letter from producer Gary Kurtz). Since then he has worked on a variety of blockbusters including Star Wars: Episodes I and II, first three Pirates of the Caribbean films, Iron Man and Super 8. His most recent role was as animation supervisor on Guillermo del Toro's sci-fi blockbuster Pacific Rim.

Kaleidescape's cinema one sees the American media server specialist lowering the price point at which technophiles can enter its world of slick music and movie jukeboxing. Well, sort of – the asking price of £3,300 will still be too much for many, particularly considering the less-than-perfect way it enables Blu-ray rips to be played...

The only thing certain about the next evolution in broadcast technology is its uncertainty. 4K/Ultra HD may be widely accepted as the next step from 1080p Full HD, but even broadcasters have yet to agree a specification. While BSkyB looks certain to go with 2160p at 50/60Hz for its sports coverage, the BBC is rumoured to want native frame rates to top 100Hz. For brands eager to punt 4K screens this is all rather inconvenient, not least because TVs prior to this Panasonic model are tethered to 4K at 30Hz, thanks to the limitations of current HDMI chippery.

I know what you’re thinking: how in the name of Citizen Kane can any home cinema ‘toy’ like the SIM2 Super Lumis justify a price of £37,000? Well, I'm going to tell you. And if I do my job right, by the end the only question you’ll be asking will be ‘Where can I get my hands on 37 grand?’.

Okay, so Rockstar's latest isn't exactly enlightened in its depiction of women. And, yes, it contains a rather troubling torture scene. But these are ultimately small concerns when placed in the context of what is surely the most outstanding, exhilarating and multilayered open-world game ever.
