You know how it is. You've decided you want a dedicated cinema room in your house, so you call in the professionals. Then, when they arrive, they notice that the space you originally had in mind isn't quite as impressive and up to the task as your basement, which you'd already planned to be an all-purpose party space – and had got as far as installing cabling for PA speakers and disco lights. And fitted a dancefloor...

In a perfect world we’d all be able to set ourselves up with one of Sony’s ground-breaking VPL-VW500ES 4K projectors. But most of us don’t live in a perfect world, or anything close. Finding the £8,800 necessary for a VPL-VW500ES just isn’t an option.

Having left the DAC market alone for the best part of twenty years, Arcam is making up for lost time with an increasingly extensive range. The latest arrival is the irDAC that replaces the earlier iDAC. While it looks similar, the irDAC boasts more inputs (which are now 192kHz capable) and is completely revised internally to include a new DAC chip, improved jitter reduction measures and extensive power supply arrangements.

Timed to coincide with the cinema release of the remake, this new hi-def outing for Paul Verhoeven's satirical sci-fi masterpiece is a must-have for fans. While the DTS-HD MA 5.1 soundtrack hasn't changed, the disc's AVC 1.85:1 1080p encode (based on a new 4K remaster) is brighter, punchier and altogether much more impressive than the dull imagery seen on the original disc. And unlike its barebones predecessor this 2014 platter also ports over the majority of the extras from MGM's old Special Edition DVD and finds space for a new 42-minute Q&A with the filmmakers, recorded last year.

Every now and then a product comes our way that makes us wonder how its maker can possibly be earning any money on it. The Sandstrom S47S13 is one of those products.

It's hard to imagine that 2013 will ever be thought of as a vintage year for Pixar. Where once the studio offered breathtakingly original flights of animated fancy, this year saw it release the merchandise-led Cars spin-off Planes and this laboured prequel to 2001's Monsters, Inc.

Set after the events of X-Men: The Last Stand, this latest spin-off sees Wolverine head off to Japan in a tale inspired by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller's celebrated 1982 comic book series.

Samsung is famous for its high-end TVs (anyone for a curved OLED?) but, as the PS51F5500 shows, isn't afraid to get its hands dirty at the budget end of the market. For a good chunk less than £1,000, this plasma gives you a helluva lot – 51 inches of screen real estate, Full HD resolution, active 3D support, onboard media player and Samsung's 'Smart Hub' technology, easily accessed by built-in Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
