It's fair to say that the humble subwoofer hasn't changed much over the years. Manufacturers have certainly experimented with lighter and stronger materials for the cones, while digital amplification has brought significantly more power to the party, but when all's said and done, a sub is basically a big wooden cube that moves air. However, even in the dark arts of bass making, scientific innovation is beginning to have an impact.

Philips has long understood the importance of video processing to TV performance. It was throwing huge amounts of computational power at LCD TVs when LCD TVs were barely a thing, with typically excellent results (albeit once you'd tinkered with some of the settings). Yet the addition of OLED to its portfolio has seen processing prowess come into its own like never before.

Focal's recently launched Chora range offers plenty of home cinema options, but with the addition of the new 826-D floorstander the company has taken its performance to another level… literally.
