Despite costing just £500, Acer’s H6510BD is surprisingly pretty with its angular, minimalist lines and gloss-white finish. Its connections match those of many more expensive PJs too, with HDMI, D-Sub PC, VGA and USB offered.

Most of Acer's projectors have been aimed at commercial and educational users, but a handful have been designed with home cinema in mind. Of these, the latest is the H7532BD. Surprisingly compact, this Full HD 1080p PJ sports all of the connectivity you'll find on bulkier units. First and foremost are the two HDMI inputs, which will accept 3D signals from suitable Blu-ray players, although no pairs of the necessary Active shutter glasses are supplied.

It’s been a long time coming, but finally the DLP camp is rolling out UHD projectors for the home. Until now, if you wanted 2160p resolution on the biggest of screens, your choice was either to buy one of Sony’s native SXRD offerings or opt for a pixel-shifting pretender from JVC or Epson. The arrival of DLP 4K seeks to blow that cosy duopoly out of the water.

'Progress always comes late'. Projectionist Alfredo said that of non-combustible film in Cinema Paradiso, but he might well have been talking about 4K home cinema projection. The technology has reluctantly, and expensively, trailed UHD flatscreens. But thanks to a new generation of DLP models, it has finally put on a welcome spurt.

The first of a new breed of more colour-rich 4K DLP projectors, BenQ’s W2700 is both affordable and impressive...

Aided by its Android smarts and in-built battery, this brilliantly styled Pico projector has a play anywhere mentality...

This projector's legacy video inputs and quirky presets might not appeal to John Archer, but its 3D performance and price tag do

There are four things you need to know about the BenQ TH535 right off the bat. First, it's a DLP projector that costs just £500. Second, while pitched as a home entertainment projector, it's also got a Presentation preset. Third, it's a Full HD model with no 4K or HDR capabilities. And, finally, it's really bright – a claimed 3,500 Lumens bright, to be precise.

BenQ's new projector treats gamers pretty well, but John Archer isn't convinced it's for movie lovers too

Video gaming is currently enjoying the sort of explosion in popularity that home cinema did in the 1980s. Sales of the latest Xbox Series X and PS5 consoles are truly mind-boggling (despite ongoing supply issues). It's no surprise, then, to see makers of traditionally AV gear suddenly falling over themselves to cater for the gaming market.

hcc_recommendedThe projector marque is once again targeting bigscreen gamers, this time with a Full HD model with handy short-throw lens and 120Hz playback. John Archer plugs in

BenQ describes its TH690ST as the 'world's first short-throw 4LED console gaming projector'. While this description sums up its core appeal well, it only scrapes the surface of everything the unit has going for it.

The wave of affordable 4K projectors just keeps on coming – I now find myself lapping up an impressively talented 4K (and HDR) projector from BenQ that costs just £1,200. And 3D fans will be ecstatic to learn that, unusually in today’s projector and TV world, the TK800 supports 3D playback, making it a possible upgrade to anyone clinging on to a Full HD 3D model.

hcc_recommendedThink of this as more home entertainment than home cinema, and BenQ's TK850 might well be projector you’ve been waiting for, declares Steve May

hcchighreccomendThe beamer brand pulls out all the stops with its UST 4K model. Time for some WALL-E, suggests Steve May

It could soon be time to trade up from your trusty flatscreen to an ultra-short-throw projector, if this flagship BenQ model is anything to go by. While conventional beamers require room to project, UST models are far more versatile, and with the V6050, BenQ has produced a premium cinema solution able to turn practically any space into a jaw-dropping 4K theatre.

Little PJ with big ideas This budget full HD projector has much to recommend it, says Martin Pipe

The W1000+ can be yours for roughly the same amount as you’d pay for a good 40in TV. And none can offer the same big- screen thrills. The machine is capable of casting a 300in image thanks to the high output of its optical engine.

The appeal of the BenQ W1050 projector is brutally simple. It delivers video-tuned pictures at kingly screen sizes for just £500. The question is: should true home cinema fans be excited about such a budget model, or is it really aimed just at the casual crowd?

This well-specified but inexpensive 1080p DLP projector could have many potential system upgraders considering projection for the first time. After all, for the cost of a 46in LED TV you could be enjoying images three times the size. It’s a tempting proposition, not least because this BenQ PJ is a beautiful-looking piece of hardware.
