Sony's VPL-HW45ES projector arrives on the back of plenty of anticipation. Its predecessor, the VPL-HW40ES, was a leading light in the sub-£2,000 price bracket, and since that model was launched Sony’s projector division has gone from strength to strength with its native 4K/high dynamic range-capable VW320ES and VW520ES home cinema beasts.

It’s been quite a year for Sony. The Japanese brand has set new standards in the TV world, and introduced a whole new product category with its 4K TVs and projectors. And now it’s continuing this return to form with its latest mid-range projector, the VPL-HW50ES.

In a perfect world we’d all be able to set ourselves up with one of Sony’s ground-breaking VPL-VW500ES 4K projectors. But most of us don’t live in a perfect world, or anything close. Finding the £8,800 necessary for a VPL-VW500ES just isn’t an option.

Those seeking the visual equivalent of fine-dining are traditionally best served at a 4K digital cinema. An eight-million pixel image, spread large and bristling with detail, is a feast for the eyes befitting the planet’s premiere cinemas. But now cineasts have another choice – they can invest in the first consumer 4K projector and have a Quad HD cinema all their own. Yet, without access to a 4K video source, is there any point in shelling out the best part of £17,000 to own one?

Sony kicks off its latest 4K projector lineup in style with this impressive performer

Not unlike Tony Curtis in The Boston Strangler, Sony continues to tighten its grip on the premium end of the home cinema projection market. Suave, good-looking and surprisingly cheap (in an admittedly expensive way), the VPL-VW300ES is the brand's fourth 4K/Ultra HD SXRD, and arguably it’s most compelling.

Middle of the range between Sony's entry-level offering and its high-end laser-guided flagship, is this the 4K HDR projector to set your sights on?

With rival projection technologies struggling to get their 4K acts together, Sony has been quick to seize the next-gen initiative with its SXRD system, and having launched the stellar 4K-resolution VPL-VW1000ES around 18 months ago, it’s now out to blow your minds with the VPL-VW500ES.

Every now and then a product lands that changes the game. One that delivers class-leading picture quality while bringing something new to the home cinema technology party. Sony's new VPL-VW520ES projector is such a product. And trust me, it's quite hard trying to write a review with your jaw hanging permanently open. It's messy.

While other brands have finally got their act together, for a long time Sony was the only game in town if you wanted a genuine 4K home cinema projector. The VW550ES is its latest 4K model, and its £9,000 price tag immediately reminds us that native 4K projection doesn’t yet come cheap. In fact, the projector hits the market with a ticket higher than its well-received VW520ES predecessor.

Sony’s VPL-VW570ES marks a performance step-up over the VPL-VW270ES. But it comes at a price...

I wouldn’t normally describe a £15,000 home entertainment product as a bargain. But in the case of the Sony VPL-VW760ES projector, I'm more than happy to make an exception.

hccrefstatusbadgeThis high-end laser projector does things with HDR that John Archer can barely believe

No consumer-focused home cinema projector manufacturer has more experience with both native 4K resolution and laser lighting than Sony. I've known this for a while, but I still wasn't prepared for the performance prowess of its £12,000 VPL-VW790ES. This is a premium beamer that's capable of leaving your jaw on the floor.

hcchighreccomendSony's new high-end projector almost manages to persuade John Archer to part with £25,000

Thanks mainly to the 4K HDR experiences unlocked by its new X1 for Projector processing silicon, Sony has already wowed us with two of its current home cinema beamers, the mid-range VPL-VW590ES (see HCC #318) and step-up VPL-VW790ES (HCC #316). Can it complete the hat-trick with the high-end VPL-VW890ES? Or, put another way, is this £25,000 laser-powered behemoth really £12,000 'better' than the VW790ES?

3D as the director intended Sony brings the thrills of big-screen 3D home and Steve May is so impressed he can’t get those spex on fast enough

Many TV addicts are sceptical of domestic 3D. There’s just not enough content available to compensate for the general inconvenience of having to wear special glasses, particularly if you like to multitask. Surfing on a laptop or snarfing custard creams are both devilishly difficult to achieve from behind Active Shutter lenses. But take 3D out of the living room and place it in a dedicated home cinema and it becomes a proposition that will make you rethink your views.
