The popular trope 'war is hell' hangs heavily over Fury, a big-budget WWII movie starring Brad Pitt as a tank commander battling the last remnants of the German army during the Spring of 1945. For much of its running time this is a grim, uncomfortable watch, a brooding character study punctuated by shocking moments of violence. Indeed, when the final act arrives, with its more straightforward focus on a David vs Goliath-style siege, you may find yourself breathing a sigh of relief.

In an answer to a reader's letter in a recent issue I said I didn't want to be a 'Netflix knocker'. And truly I don't. But the American streaming giant is certainly making it pretty hard work. Here's why.

Last year saw the BBC's popular Saturday evening sci-fi series undergo another period of transition, introducing a new actor in the lead role. Unsurprisingly, Peter Capaldi's spiky portrayal of The Doctor upset some fans, but it was clearly a calculated move on the part of showrunner Steven Moffat, shaking up the status quo to keep the series feeling fresh and unpredictable.

It may not be the cheapest 48in screen we've seen recently, but Samsung's UE48H6400 still represents stunning value for money. The design, while not especially original – the X-shaped stand seems a bit dated – is still attractive, with a glossy inner bezel and see-through outer frame. And the Samsung scores points over its rivals by providing four HDMI inputs, joined by copious multimedia support in the shape of three USBs and Ethernet and Wi-Fi hookups.

Mr. Peabody isn't like other dogs. Not only is he super-intelligent, but he also won the right to adopt a boy of his own. Oh, and he also invented the WABAC, a time machine that he uses to teach his young prodigy all about history.

A 48in Full HD Smart TV, Philips' 48PFT5509 rides into town waving a £500 ticket in the face of potential cash-conscious buyers. Its affordable nature isn’t obvious from its design. The frame is on-trend slim, and the open metal stand mirrors much of the competition, too. You don’t, however, get Philips’ Ambilight technology, but I suppose this is a logical enough sacrifice in targeting that £500 mark.

HBO's blockbuster adaptation of George R.R. Martin's series of fantasy novels continues to go from strength-to-strength. Following the shocking events of last season's 'Red Wedding', the political landscape has shifted, with new players entering the arena and old ones facing a multitude of new threats. Of course, discussing anything that happens risks spoiling the myriad twists and shocks that these ten episodes have in store for those not already watching on Sky Atlantic. So all we'll say is that Game of Thrones remains one of the best TV dramas being made today. Watch it!

The tail end of 2014 saw the publication of the latest HCC Movie Awards (which can also be found right here) and, as always, the nominations were a mix of the painfully obvious and the fiercely contested. So, while the likes of Best Picture Quality, Best Audio Quality and even Best Disc fell into place pretty quickly, others proved much more troublesome – the most obvious example being Best Remaster.
