The latest in ViewSonic's LightStream range, the Pro7827HD certainly packs in the features. This modestly priced DLP single-chipper is evidently aimed at the home cinema crowd, with its native 3D support, REC.709 picture preset, ISF modes and eye-catching claimed contrast ratio of 22,000:1.

Issue #263 of Home Cinema Choice is on sale today – and as usual it's packed with AV goodness...

Home cinema used to be oh-so simple. Partner a bigscreen TV with a home theatre in a box (HTIB) and you were sorted for whatever DVD or Blu-ray you wanted to play. You could go the separates route, splitting your speakers, AV amp and disc-player purchases in pursuit of greater quality, but an all-in-one system couldn't be criticised when it came to covering the basics. It was wonderfully democratic.

With its Opticon series, DALI aims to deliver a speaker range accessible to a wide audience, yet without compromising its high-end values. Easier said than done perhaps, but by taking matters into its own hands the Danish brand might have found a winning formula.

While high dynamic range (HDR) technology isn’t completely new, 2016 is the year where the AV industry is getting really serious about it. Amazon and Netflix are unleashing HDR streams, and crucially for HCC readers Ultra HD Blu-ray has finally launched, offering a hopefully consistently brilliant way of enjoying the extra brightness range and colour richness that HDR brings to the table.

Luxury TV company Loewe is widening the choice for those seeking an OLED TV with the launch of its Bild 7, a 4K/Ultra HD OLED screen with support for both HDR 10 and Dolby Vision content.

To be honest, I was both excited and anxious about using Sky Q. From its distinctive handset to Planner grid, classic Sky has been a home comfort for the best part of a decade. The idea of junking it all in favour of some new-fangled product seemed a tad reckless. But the lure of a hybrid system mixing satellite delivery with streaming is too tempting to ignore – as is the prospect of 4K channels launching this Summer.

Anthropomorphic animals have been the key feature of animation since the art form's earliest days. And you only have to look at the longevity and familiarity of characters like Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck to see how important the concept has been to the Walt Disney brand. Never before, though, has the studio approached the subject as subversively as it has with Zootropolis.

Soundbars are big sellers on the high street but they can get a cold shoulder from the home cinema aficionado seeking authentic surround sound. With its premium-priced HW-K950, Samsung has decided to address that very issue and do it in style. Although to call this simply a 'soundbar' doesn't do it justice.

We had to wait two years until JVC refreshed its projector line – and two years is an eternity in the current AV world. At least with its 2016 X-range, it looks like JVC’s engineers used the time wisely, adding up-to-the-minute connectivity and HDR support to JVC’s proprietary and consistently excellent D-ILA projection engine.
