While there's a perception that streaming platforms, home media and online piracy have dealt the commercial theatre market near-fatal blows, box office records seem to be repeatedly smashed, most recently by Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Meanwhile, attendance at UK cinemas was up 17 per cent in 2015, and new technologies (Dolby Atmos, IMAX Laser) and old (70mm) are working hard to lure punters.

Eight months after the Miskatonic Massacre, Doctors Herbert West (Jeffrey Combs) and Dan Cain (Bruce Abbott) return from serving as medics in a South American civil war to take up jobs at the Miskatonic University Hospital. Moving into a house next door to the cemetery, Herbert continues his experiments re-animating the dead. When he comes across the heart of Dan's former lover Megan in the hospital morgue, he gets the idea of bringing her back to life in a body assembled from disparate parts. As you do.

Not one of the most prolific Italian filmmakers, Luciano Ercoli demonstrated a sense of cinematic flair and style that makes it hard not to wonder what he might have gone on to create had he not retired after directing just eight films. This is especially true of his two forays into the giallo genre with the actress who would become his wife, Nieves Navarro (credited in these flicks as Susan Scott).

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced its first wave of Ultra HD Blu-ray releases for the UK. As expected, the titles in question are the same as those the studio released in the US at the end of February and include The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Salt, Hancock, Chappie, The Pineapple Express and The Smurfs 2. The discs go on sale in the UK on May 23.

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment will release the 1996 sci-fi blockbuster Independence Day on Ultra HD Blu-ray in the US on June 7. The three-disc set (1x Ultra HD Blu-ray, 2x Blu-rays) promises newly restored 4K presentations of both the original theatrical cut and the extended cut of the film, plus an all-new half-hour documentary entitled Independence Day: A Legacy Surging Forward. As yet, there is no UK release date.

Thirty years have passed since the fall of the Empire and the galaxy is in turmoil once again. Luke Skywalker has disappeared and a new threat calling itself the First Order has risen from the ashes of the Empire, bringing with it a new world-destroying super-weapon. Meanwhile, on the desolate desert planet of Jakku, a spirited young scavenger called Rey (Daisy Ridley) befriends a cute little droid and ends up on the run with former Stormtrooper Finn (John Boyega).

Sony has announced that it is releasing a new firmware update for its VPL-VW320ES 4K home cinema projector that makes it capable of handling High Dynamic Range content. The upgrade makes the VPL-VW320ES the third Sony home cinema projector to support the 4K HDR format, alongside the VPL-VW5000ES and VPL-VW520ES.

Following a blockbuster run at cinemas, Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens is now setting new records for DVD and Blu-ray sales in the UK. According to figures released by BASE (the British Association for Screen Entertainment), the home entertainment release managed combined sales of 1,247,622 physical units during its first week of release. This makes it the year's biggest selling title, easily surpassing the 940,000 Spectre managed during its first week on sale.
