With every new superhero TV show and movie striving to outdo the last for action spectacle, character overload, moodiness and/or plot complexity, Deadpool perhaps comes as a much-needed breath of fresh air.

The first Ultra HD Blu-ray player to find its way onto our test bench, Panasonic’s excellent DMP-UB900, is a hard act to follow. But Samsung’s UBD-K8500 makes a case for itself right from the off thanks to the £430 price – a saving of £170 over its rival. Is there a hidden cost behind this up-front saving?

When you relax into a cinema chair for that long-awaited blockbuster, icy drink in cup holder and bag of popcorn balanced on lap, it’s a fair bet that the last thing on your mind will be a shape of the big white screen in front of you. Chances are that your movie will be shown in one of two commonly used aspect ratios – 1.85:1 or 2.39:1, typically referred to in the filmmaking world as flat and CinemaScope respectively. But you might witness something a little more unusual – 2.0.1 or a retro-tinged 1.37:1. And turn the clock back sixty years and it would have been a different situation entirely.

After what seems like an age of speculation, 4K Ultra HD BD is finally here, and the Panasonic DMP-UB900 stands as its early champion. Positioned above Samsung’s rival UBD-K8500 in both price and spec, this a player designed to serve the AV enthusiast – it’s the first source component we’ve seen to get THX 4K Source certification, which implies some rigorous performance testing – without entirely pricing itself beyond the 4K curious.

This steamy 1984 thriller stars Kathleen Turner as Joanna Crane, a fashion designer who moonlights as a prostitute called China Blue. But Joanna's double-life is soon complicated by the arrival of two new men in her life. The first is Bobby (John Laughlin), an unhappily married electronics expert hired to spy on Joanna, who ends up falling in love with her instead. Much more troubling is the obsessive 'Reverend' Peter Shayne (Anthony Perkins), whose idea of 'saving' Joanna/China isn't likely to win him the Samaritan of the Year award...

While it's not unusual to see loft spaces repurposed as dedicated home cinemas – why use your attic to store a legacy VHS collection when you can be watching Blu-rays in there instead? – this professional install is actually located in the roof space of a double garage. Designed by London's Automated Smart Homes, it finds space for six luxurious Fortress recliners and a discreet 7.2-channel speaker system.

Anyone drawing up a mid-range/premium soundbar shortlist will no doubt be intrigued by Yamaha's YSP-1600. Selling for £500, it shares some of the DNA of the brand's higher-end models (the YSP-2500 and YSP-5600) but leaves more cash in the bank for Blu-rays. There are plenty of other prospect at this price, however, so can the soundbar do enough to make it an essential audition?
