If the first Hunger Games was Hollywood's answer to Battle Royale, this sequel expands the concept considerably. The first half of its lengthy running time focuses on the political ramifications of Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta's (Josh Hutchinson) victory and the seeds of rebellion it has sewn. Only then do we go finally go back to the games.

It’s not just video that is getting a resolution update. Audio has also jumped the bandwagon and is now promising an altogether sharper sonic experience. The High-Resolution Audio banner is being unfurled by a growing number of big-name brands, eager to push performance beyond the limitations of the now venerable compact disc.

Thanks to the enduring popularity of Akira Toriyama's original Dragon Ball manga strip and ensuing animated adaptations (the 153-episode Dragon Ball and 291-episode Dragon Ball Z), the past three decades have seen the release of more than 50 licensed videogames. So you'd expect the development teams to have ironed out all of the kinks by now and perfected the formula, right?

From TV hit The Walking Dead to Brad Pitt's blockbuster smash World War Z, modern culture has been treating zombies way too seriously lately. So it’s brilliantly refreshing to see Dead Rising 3 gleefully treating them as nothing more than fodder for the most outrageous range of weapons ever found in a game.

Robert Rodriguez's spoof trailer from 2007's Grindhouse seems to be the gift that just keeps on giving for fans of exploitation cinema. But while the first Machete served its main course of blood and babes with a side dish of commentary about immigration, this even more violent sequel has no such lofty pretensions.

It’s no coincidence that Xbox One launch title Ryse: Son of Rome references movies much more than games during its short but reasonably sweet running time. Saving Private Ryan, Predator, 300, Southern Comfort and, inevitably, Gladiator are all liberally ‘borrowed from’ throughout.

This quick-witted and zany sequel to 2010's surprise animated smash finds former supervillain Gru having renounced a life of crime in favour of raising his three adopted daughters and using his gadgets to make jam. But when the Anti-Villain League asks for help tracking down a mystery criminal, Gru finds himself back in the game and up to his neck in something more terrifying than he ever expected: romance. Terrific cartoon fun – even if it's not quite as good as the side-splitting original.
