New Home cinema formats don't come around all that often. Ultra HD Blu-ray is the first physical media platform to give system owners pause for thought since 3D Blu-ray, itself now six years old. Anticipation before its launch was therefore high – would 4K discs (with HDR, too) make good on the promise of a genuine step-up in quality? Would studios hit the ground running with an extensive, desirable catalogue of titles? Would player and display hardware arrive well-featured, well-designed and well-priced? We've now had a year to ponder all these questions and more...

For Arcam fans, the company is up there with Church's shoes or Aston Martin, genuinely English with a solid reputation. And whereas it may once have been seen as a little staid, these days it's rocking a lineup of AV hardware that will get any cinephile's juices flowing.

One of the tell-tale signs you're a 'home cinema hero' – according to my colleague Steve May – is that you 'still have a LaserDisc player, somewhere...' And, indeed, to AV geeks of a certain vintage, the mere word conjures up cherished memories of that unmistakable whooshing sound as the big and beautiful medium – think CD, enlarged to LP size – was brought up to speed within the sizeable slab of a player.

In the four decades since it was founded, American audio-meister Polk, based in Baltimore, Maryland, has, as it puts it, been dedicated to 'researching, engineering and innovating toward new sonic revelations'. Its Signature series, although its new entry-level, carries some of these refinements.

It’s been a long time coming, but finally the DLP camp is rolling out UHD projectors for the home. Until now, if you wanted 2160p resolution on the biggest of screens, your choice was either to buy one of Sony’s native SXRD offerings or opt for a pixel-shifting pretender from JVC or Epson. The arrival of DLP 4K seeks to blow that cosy duopoly out of the water.

Universal has cashed in on the recent cinematic release of its big-budget Mummy reboot by rolling out its previous Brendan Fraser Mummy trilogy (1999's The Mummy, 2001's The Mummy Returns and 2008's The Mummy: Curse of the Dragon Emperor) on 4K Blu-ray. Which reminds us that while the first film was a genuine hoot, the second was rather a mess, while the third was as much fun as snogging a desiccated corpse.

While for some a living room can easily double up as a home cinema, others crave a private space where they can get away from it all and settle into the serious business of watching movies. And, in this case, blasting aliens, thrashing cars and pretending to be Lionel Messi.

When a probe carrying samples from Mars docks with the International Space Station, the small crew discover that they've got more than they bargained for. Amongst the soil they discover a dormant alien microbe that, once free from its confinement, starts growing at a rapid rate and hunting them down.
