A finalist in this year's CEDIA Awards in the home cinema £40,000-£100,000 category, this below-stairs theatre saw custom installer Finite Solutions given a somewhat unusual brief. The owners had recently moved into the house, and one reason for choosing it was that it came with its own cinema room. Yet, while happy with the performance, researching the world of personal AV playrooms led them to realise they could make it even better, and have it re-styled to their own tastes.

We typically think that home cinema entered public consciousness with Blu-ray in the noughties, DVD in the nineties, or VHS in the eighties. However, owning and operating a personal screening room goes back a lot further. Well-heeled AV heads – think Hollywood moguls and glitterati – have been hunkering down in darkened rooms, adjusting comfy recliners, and kicking back for that special feature presentation since the early 20th century.

Acoustic Energy's AEGO Sound3ar (so named because it's part of the company's third-generation Aego range) makes a great first impression. This £200 audio booster has the style charm to appear more expensive. The black grilles, aluminium trim and rounded edges on both its subwoofer and soundbar mix together well.

For many years, it's been fashionable for brands to point to their heritage in studio and professional work to bolster their credibility when selling you speakers for the home. What you see here from Spendor, in the shape of its S3/5R2, is one of the ultimate expressions of that as a concept.

It’s safe to say that Panasonic’s soundbars haven’t exactly set the world alight in terms of performance, but the Japanese behemoth can never be accused of short-changing its customers on features or spec. That’s certainly the case with the range-topping SC-ALL70T, a 3.1-channel affair with a claimed 350W of power under the bonnet. It comes equipped with multiroom functionality, music streaming, a wireless subwoofer, Bluetooth and much more, all for £400. On paper it looks like a sweet deal.

Now TV Smart Box

We've been besotted with Now TV's low-cost, flexible approach to TV streaming since it first launched in 2013; new this year is a slightly bigger box that adds an extra layer of functionality while still keeping the price tag sensible (£40). So what is the new trick, exactly? A digital TV tuner. Not 4K playback, then, but it does make the Now TV hardware all-encompassing when it comes to telly content, integrating PPV Sky (movies, sport, entertainment and kids bundles) with terrestrial catchup and live TV (with pause/rewind function). Not to mention the plethora of other apps and media playback skills on offer.  www.nowtv.com
