Following the critical and commercial success of his films J'accuse! (1919) and La Roue (1922), French filmmaker Abel Gance concocted an audacious plan to shoot a series of six films following the life of Napoleon Bonaparte. However, unable to drum up the funds needed to make all six, Gance was forced to stop shooting after a couple of years and instead contented himself with the creation of one epic movie culminating with Boney's invasion of Italy.

Labyrinth feels at times rather awkward, laboured and, yes, ‘of its time’. With the combined creative forces of Jim Henson, David Bowie, Terry Jones and George Lucas infused into almost every frame, though, it’s blissfully impossible to separate Labyrinth from the nostalgia associated with a pre-CGI era willing to back real imagination over endless formulaic sequels. As such it’s a title every serious film fan should own.

It's getting hard to find many points of difference between AV receivers around the key £500 mark. Pioneer's VSX-1131, originally priced £550 but available now for less if you shop around, offers a specifications sheet with few surprises, beyond the fact that it's very well featured indeed. Whatever you're hoping to find here, you probably will.

Brian De Palma took his love of all things Alfred Hitchcock to the extreme with this nutty 1984 thriller that raised the heckles of moral guardians on its original release.

There’s always a touch of madness about the films of Luc Besson. Sometimes this works, sometimes it doesn't. With Lucy, it mostly works. The story – about a woman who gains the ability to use the entire capacity of her brain – starts off daft and gets crazier, but Besson's flare for action, some breathless pacing and a committed performance from Scarlett Johansson keep you locked in for the ride.

While major studios prove adept at handling home media releases for their modern blockbuster titles, there's a growing stable of independent labels bringing much-loved catalogue titles and cult classics to Blu-ray in the UK.

Here at HCC we rather liked REL’s Serie S subwoofers, even if it has involved repeatedly telling sub-editors that there isn’t an ‘s’ on the end of Serie. When the company announced a Super High Output overhaul of the S/5 and S/3 models we had questions. Could they be better than the original? Would the price remain competitive? Might REL find that lost ‘s’? The answer to the last is 'no', but I'm happy to reply in the affirmative to the first two.

While 4K/Ultra HD televisions have been around for years now, native 4K sources are still relatively scarce. Especially if you can’t afford an Ultra HD Blu-ray player, the new Sky Q Silver box and subscription UHD service, and/or Netflix and Amazon 4K streaming.

Philips has become the latest manufacturer to squeeze Dolby Atmos technology into a soundbar. Undercutting rival Atmos 'bars from Yamaha and Samsung, the £900 Fidelio B8 is the first to offer an all-in-one 3D audio solution for less than a grand.

The more high dynamic range (HDR) displays I’ve seen, the more convinced I’ve become that the only type of LCD TV that can comfortably handle HDR’s extreme light demands are those that use direct rather than edge lighting – ideally in conjunction with some degree of ‘local dimming’, whereby clusters of LEDs have their light output adjusted independently.
